Ropes finance partner leaves for White & Case

White & Case’s London hiring spree has continued with the hire of Ropes & Gray finance partner Chris McGarry.

McGarry was a comparatively new partner at Ropes, joining in 2015 from Weil Gotshal & Manges.

Clifford Chance-trained McGarry was an associate at Weil, having moved back into private practice after spending four years in-house at RBS.

In his new role, McGarry will become a member of White & Case’s capital markets practice, which supports the firm’s structured finance work in London.

The US firm’s 2020 strategy includes a focus on growth in London, in capital markets and the global financial institutions industry.

McGarry’s hire follows a series of big-names lateral joiners in White & Case’s London office.

Just before Christmas, the firm expanded its competition team with Macfarlanes practice head Marc Israel.

Additional hires on the finance and corporate side include Clifford Chance corporate Patrick Sarch, Hogan Lovells partner Guy Potel and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer banking partner Jeffrey Rubinoff.

Ashurst partners Jonathan Parry and Mark Clarke joined the capital markets and litigation teams respectively.

Ropes has lost few partners in the City in the last 12 months, instead hiring Herbert Smith Freehills former finance head Malcolm Hitching.

London senior partner and finance partner Maurice Allen left the firm at the end of last year, moving over to DLA Piper where is now a consultant.
