Trump criticizes ‘ridiculous’ ruling blocking his sanctuary cities order

President Donald Trump on Wednesday used Twitter to criticize a federal judge’s decision that blocks his order banning federal grants to sanctuary cities.

Trump said the decision was “ridiculous” and the plaintiffs challenging his executive orders were targeting jurisdictions within the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, reported the Wall Street Journal (sub. req.), Politico and USA Today.

U.S. District Judge William Orrick ruled on Tuesday that the executive order was likely unconstitutional, partly because of its ban on federal funding that “bears no meaningful relationship to immigration enforcement.” The suit had been brought by the city and county of San Francisco and Santa Clara County.

Trump wrote in a series of three tweets: “First the 9th Circuit rules against the [travel] ban & now it hits again on sanctuary cities—both ridiculous rulings. See you in the Supreme Court! Out of our very big country, with many choices, does everyone notice that both the ‘ban’ case and now the ‘sanctuary’ case is brought in the 9th Circuit, which has a terrible record of being overturned (close to 80%). They used to call this ‘judge shopping!’ Messy system.”

The White House press secretary’s office also issued a statement calling the decision “yet one more example of egregious overreach by a single, unelected district judge.” The statement asserted that “the rule of law suffered another blow” and said the decision “undermines faith in our legal system.”
