Osborne Clarke enters mainland China with new association

Osborne Clarke has opened a new office in Shanghai, giving the firm its first base in mainland China.

The launch follows the establishment of Zhang & Yu Partners formed by Guohua Zhang and Steve Yu.

Zhang was formerly a consultant at Osborne Clarke’s Hong Kong associated firm Koh Vass & Co, which was set up in 2015. Prior to that he was a partner at Bird & Bird, working in the firm’s Shanghai office.

He will set up Osborne Clarke’s new Shanghai office alongside Steve Yu – formerly managing partner of Armstrong Teasdale’s Shanghai base.

They will lead a team of six lawyers in mainland China, focusing on corporate and commercial issues across Osborne Clarke’s sector focuses of healthcare, technology and automotive.

The group will work alongside Koh Vass & Co and will be joined later this year by additional partners, legal recruits and business services staff.

After a period of European and US growth, Osborne Clarke turned its attention to growing out Asia from 2014 onwards.

It formalised its relationship with Hong Kong firm Koh Vass & Co in 2015 as well as BTG Legal in India in November 2014.

It also entered the Singapore market last year through an association with local firm Queen Street Legal.

The Singapore office is led by Bird & Bird partner Chia-Ling Koh, with the firm most recently hiring drew & Napier lawyer Dax Lim as a director.

OC Queen Street also moved to a new open-plan office in Raffles Place, operating a similar hot-desking model to Osborne Clarke’s Reading office.
