Bird & Bird makes up 16 lawyers as promotions season nears end

Bird & Bird has prioritised Europe once again in its annual promotions round, with just one lawyer out of 16 hailing from outside the region.

A total of 15 new partners have been elected across the UK and continental Europe, including six in the UK and four in Germany. The Netherlands and Spain have seen two appointments each.

Just one lawyer has been promoted in the Asia-Pacific region – namely intellectual property partner Troy Gurnett in Australia.

This year’s promotions round is nearly double the size of 2016 when just nine lawyers were made up. Last year’s appointments were similarly Europe-heavy, with London and continental Europe each seeing four new partners.

While Bird & Bird promoted far more partners than last year, Irwin Mitchell announced a similar round to last year when 13 new partners were made up.

This year, Irwin Mitchell has promoted 15 lawyers across the country, including seven in the firm’s business legal services group and six in the personal team.

The firm has also made up two people to associate director positions – the partner-level equivalent for non-lawyers at Irwin Mitchell. Head of strategy in IT Graham Clark is promoted, alongside Glen Walker, the director of the firm’s debt recovery business Ascent Performance Group.

Six lawyers have been promoted at fellow national firm Shoosmiths – the majority of whom work in Birmingham.

Last year the firm made up five new partners, with real estate continuing to account for the bulk of promotions.

Holman Fenwick Willan’s promotions, however, are far off its appointment of nine new partners in 2016.

Just three new lawyers have been made up this year in London and Brussels.

The firm also promoted four new legal directors – a newly created role that recognises an alternative career to partnership.
