Sullivan & Cromwell launches in Brussels with Wilson Sonsini hire

Sullivan & Cromwell has launched in Brussels, marking its first office opening in Continental Europe for over two decades.

The US firm has hired Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati EU competition and antitrust head Michael Rosenthal to lead the new office.

He will be based in Brussels and become a member of the firm’s global antitrust and competition group.

It is not the first time Rosenthal has been hired to launch a new venture, having joined Wilson Sonsini in 2011 to open its Brussels office – its first in Europe.

Rosenthal had led Hunton & Williams Brussels office prior to the move, and exited the firm alongside fellow partner Paul McGeown. McGeown remains at Wilson Sonsini.

Sullivan & Cromwell rarely hires laterals or opens new offices. In 2013, the firm’s London office recruited Linklaters finance partner Chris Howard, while Simmons & Simmons partner Louise Delahunty joined the US firm as counsel.

Sullivan is the latest firm to make moves in Brussels, with Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan continuing to grow in the Belgian capital.

Last week Shearman & Sterling competition partners Stephen Mavroghenis and Miguel Rato both joined Quinn Emanuel, just months after colleague Trever Soames made the same move.
