Tata Group hires new GC from Indian firm Shardul Amarchand

Tata Group has appointed Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas’ head of corporate Shuva Mandal as its new group general counsel.

Mandal will join one of India’s biggest conglomerates in July and will replace Bharat Vasani, who has been Tata’s legal boss for the last 17 years. He will be part of Tata chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran’s special team that will assist in transforming the company.

Vasani will move into a more strategic and advisory role, and continue with the group as the legal adviser to the chairman’s office.

Mandal has been a partner at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas (SAM & Co) for nearly two years, and before that he was a partner with AZB & Partners. During his time at SAM & Co, he headed the firm’s corporate, M&A and private equity practices, and steered the national practice group through an important period of the firm’s growth and transformation.

Commenting on Mandal’s move, Shardul Shroff, executive chair of SAM & Co said: “While Shuva’s resignation leaves us deeply saddened, we are also pleased to know that he will be joining the very highly-regarded Tata team.

The Tata Group has been a client of the firm and we have a strong and extensive relationship with the group. This relationship will only strengthen with Shuva’s move to the Tata Group.”

SAM & Co was established in 2015 following the dramatic split of legacy firm Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co. It now has 480 lawyers, including 91 partners, across seven offices in India.

The firm is yet to confirm who will take up the head of corporate and M&A role following Mandal’s move. Its corporate practice consists of 44 partners.
