Comey says administration assertions about the FBI being in disarray were ‘lies, plain and simple’

Developing: Former FBI director James Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday that he was confused and concerned about shifting explanations given for his firing.

The Trump administration, he said, chose to defame him and the FBI by asserting the organization was in disarray and the workforce had lost confidence in its leader. “Those were lies, plain and simple,” Comey said.

“The FBI is honest, the FBI is strong. And the FBI is and always will be independent,” Comey said.

He also said he was confused when President Donald Trump say he was fired in connection with the Russia investigation. But when asked if Trump had sought to stop his investigation into Russian involvement, Comey said, “Not to my understanding, no.”
