Matheson opens third US office in San Francisco

Irish firm Matheson has expanded its international footprint, launching its third US office in San Francisco.

The firm, which already has an office in Silicon Valley and New York, has appointed partner Mark O’Sullivan to lead the new office alongside technology and privacy lawyer Chris Bollard, who will join the firm in August from Arthur Cox where he was an associate.

Matheson managing partner Michael Jackson said that the firm’s new San Francisco office allows the firm to “support our West Coast client base with operations in Ireland, and also our Irish client base accessing international markets”.

The new office will focus on technology, data protection, fintech, intellectual property, international corporate transactions and tax; as well as other key areas including pharma, medtech and financial services.

O’Sullivan commented: “The US West Coast is an important technology and innovation ecosystem with significant investment into Ireland.  Face to face relationships are as important to us as they are to our clients – and all of our global offices are partner-led.

“The global technology industry is booming, fuelled by advancements in emerging areas such as AI and data analytics. Post-Brexit, Ireland, with an already large presence of technology multinationals, has the capacity to benefit from additional US investment into Europe.  The opening of our San Francisco office will support our continued collaboration with our clients and help them to remain competitive as they deal with the complexity of the current market conditions.

“Furthermore, working with the strong Irish Government support network and the IDA on the West Coast, we can play a part in integrating more of these companies into Ireland, ultimately creating revenue growth and job opportunities.”

Outside of the US and Ireland, the firm also has an office in London led by partner Liam Quirke.

The firm has also made a series of appointments across the firm, making partner Anne-Marie Bohan head of the firm’s international business group, appointing partner Darren Maher as head of Matheson’s international financial institutions group. The firm has also hired Mason Hayes & Curran partner Ciaran Healey to join its corporate and commercial department, and LK Shields head of IP and technology Deirdre Kilroy.

Estimations from The Lawyer‘s latest Euro 100 report put the firm’s turnover at €115m, while revenue per lawyer stood at €458,000 and revenue per partner at €1.49m.
