Ex-Foley & Mansfield Partner's Death Ruled a Suicide

Nearly three months after the body of former Foley & Mansfield partner and federal prosecutor Beranton Whisenant Jr. was found on a beach in Hollywood, Florida, local police have determined how he died.

Investigators concluded that Whisenant, 37, killed himself with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A statement from Hollywood police on Aug. 10 said that detectives and a medical examiner had made the determination. Whisenant’s fully clothed body was found by a passerby in the surf in May. Police subsequently pulled his body ashore, but a weapon was not recovered.

Whisenant, a father of three children, worked for the major crimes unit at the U.S. attorney’s office in Miami, which he joined in January after more than nine years at Foley & Mansfield. At the national litigation firm, where he made partner in 2013, Whisenant mostly focused on asbestos suits. He specialized in product liability, medical malpractice, securities litigation and toxic torts work.

Court records show that while working for the U.S. Department of Justice, Whisenant had been handling several visa and passport fraud cases.
