Special counsel Mueller is reportedly investigating whether Flynn had role in seeking Clinton emails

Special counsel Robert Mueller is reportedly investigating whether former national security adviser Michael Flynn may have played a part in an effort to obtain Hillary Clinton’s deleted emails from Russian hackers.

Investigators for Mueller have reportedly been conducting interviews and collecting information to determine whether Flynn had any role in an effort by Republican activist Peter Smith to obtain the stolen emails, the Wall Street Journal (sub. req.) reports. Its story is based on anonymous people who are familiar with the matter.

Smith previously told the Wall Street Journal that he suspected the emails could provide embarrassing details about Clinton’s response to the terrorist attacks in Benghazi in September 2012, and her work with the Clinton Foundation. According to the Wall Street Journal, Smith portrayed Flynn as an ally in his efforts. Smith died from asphyxiation in a hotel room about 10 days after he spoke to the Wall Street Journal in May for the earlier story; a note found near his body said there was no foul play in his death

Interviewers were also looking into whether Flynn’s son, Michael G. Flynn, and his consulting firm, the Flynn Intel Group, played any role in the effort. Lawyers for both men declined to comment when contacted by the Wall Street Journal. Mueller is also reportedly looking at Smith’s relationship with other Trump campaign advisers and aides.

Smith told the Wall Street Journal in the May interview that he never acquired any emails because he couldn’t verify that they were genuine.
