Bakers shakes up Madrid management as MP steps down

Baker McKenzie Madrid managing partner José María Alonso Puig has stepped down from the role and will be replaced by Rodrigo Ogea.

The news of Alonso Puig stepping down comes a week after it was announced that the firm was dropped as footballer Cristiano Ronaldo’s legal adviser. The footballer is accused of defrauding €14.7m (£13.1m) from Spanish authorities and is now instructing Madrid-based Choclan Montalvo on the case.

Baker McKenzie confirmed Alonso Puig’s decision to step down after he applied to replace Sonia Gumpert as head of the Madrid Bar Association. She has chaired the Madrid Bar for four years since assuming the role in 2013.

The firm said that should Alonso Puig’s bid for the Madrid Bar not be successful, he would become the head of litigation for Madrid.

Alonso Puig joined Baker McKenzie from Garrigues in 2012 and was managing partner of the office since 1 July 2013.

In a written statement from Ronaldo, Garrigues was named as Ronaldo’s tax advisers between 2011 and 2013. Alonso Puig was managing partner at Garrigues for two of the three years of that relationship.

Data from The Lawyer Global 200 shows Garrigues is Spain’s largest firm with 264 partners. Tax is the firm’s largest practice with 84 partners.

Alonso Puig is highly experienced in sports law with a focus on disputes relating to commercial image rights agreements of sportspeople.

Rodrigo Ogea will assume the role of Madrid managing partner and will work alongside Montserrat Llopart who fills the same role in Barcelona.

Llopart is relatively new to the role of Barcelona managing partner after taking charge on 1 January this year.

Ogea has been head of the firm’s tax practice in Spain since 2008. He headed up a team of 11 partners making it the firm’s second-largest practice area after corporate (14) data from The Lawyer Global 200 shows.

Baker McKenzie is the fourth-largest firm in Spain with 53 partners split between its two offices in Madrid and Barcelona.

A Baker McKenzie spokesperson said: “We thank José María for his contributions as managing partner since 2013, during which time our Madrid office has gone from strength to strength. Congratulations to Rodrigo on his appointment to head our market-leading team.”
