Zynga Names Former Tesla Attorney as Chief Legal Officer

Phuong Phillips.

Tesla Inc. alum Phuong Phillips stepped into the role of chief legal officer at Zynga Inc. this week.

Phillips will oversee all legal and government affairs for the San Francisco-based online gaming company, according to a press release issued Wednesday.

She is replacing Devang Shah, the company’s former general counsel, who left Zynga in April after seven years with the company, according to his LinkedIn profile. Shah began as senior corporate counsel in 2010 and was promoted twice before being named GC in 2013.

The company declined to share the number of lawyers in the department but said Phillips will oversee employees in the United States, Canada, the U.K., Ireland, India and Finland. There appear to be at least nine lawyers in-house at Zynga, according to a LinkedIn search.

Phillips said she is “incredibly proud” to work with Zynga’s leadership “on the company’s next chapter.”

“Zynga’s passionate employees, combined with its popular forever franchises like Words With Friends, Zynga Poker and CSR2, make it one of the most dynamic mobile companies around,” she said in Wednesday’s release. “I’m excited to lead Zynga Legal and partner with teams across the company to deliver players their favorite social mobile gaming experiences.”

Most recently, Phillips worked at Tesla as an associate general counsel. There, she managed the post-acquisition integrations of Grohmann Engineering and SolarCity Corp., the clean energy company where she worked for nearly seven years prior to joining Tesla.

At SolarCity, Phillips worked as deputy GC, VP and head of corporate securities. She advised on M&A, board and corporate governance, securities offerings and compliance at SolarCity.

Before going in-house, Phillips worked as a corporate attorney with Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati for seven years.

At Zynga, Phillips will report to chief executive Frank Gibeau. “I’m excited to welcome Phuong to Zynga. She has a proven track record of navigating complex and evolving industries, while working closely with teams to drive positive business outcomes,” Gibeau said in the press release. “We look forward to bringing Phuong’s experience across corporate affairs, mergers and acquisitions, and governance to Zynga’s legal team.”

In 2015, Phillips was named one of the most influential women in Silicon Valley by the Silicon Valley Business Journal.

At the time, she credited SolarCity GC Seth Weissman for acting as a mentor to her and said her legal colleagues were “like family.”
