Simpson Thacher scales back City promotions in 11-strong round

Simpson Thacher & Bartlett has announced the promotion of 11 new partners, including one lawyer in London.

The firm has made up 11 globally for two consecutive years now, making it its fourth largest promotions round in 10 years. In 2006, Simpson Thacher announced 13 new partners, while 12 were made up in 2011.

The only London promotion comes from the firm’s funds practice, with Robert Lee becoming a partner in the group.

Lee joined Simpson Thacher in 2011 after training and working at Travers Smith. Simpson Thacher is one of the few US firms in London that does not offer training contracts.

The last time Simpson Thacher promoted just one London lawyer was three years ago, when Clare Gaskell joined the private equity group. Last year, the firm announced two London partners, while the largest London cohort came in 2015 when the firm promoted three London partners – Carol Daniel, Wheatly MacNamara and Seema Shah.

The promotions significantly boosted the firm’s number of London female partners after counting zero in its ranks for years. Clare Gaskell made the cut the previous year.

Nine of this year’s promotions come from the firm’s US offices in Los Angeles, New York, Palo Alto and Washington DC.

Five of the firm’s 11 offices did not see any promotions – Hong Kong, Houston, Sao Paulo, Seoul and Tokyo.

Funds and finance feature prominently in the firm’s promotions, with six partners made up in funds, banking and capital markets.

There are two corporate promotions in the US, while funds lawyer Yang Wang is the only promotion in the Asia Pacific. Wang is the first Beijing promotion since 2008.
