Simmons & Simmons seals JLV with Singapore best friend

Simmons & Simmons has established a joint law venture (JLV) with Singaporean boutique JWS, which has been in a “best friends” relationship with the UK firm for over a year.

JWS Asia Law Corporation was established in March 2015 by former Allen & Gledhill funds partner Jek Aun Long. The firm currently has three partners including disputes lawyer Mohammed Reza who joined from Rajah & Tann in September 2015 and banking and finance lawyer Calvin Tan, who is also an of counsel of Simmons & Simmons Singapore office.

The JLV will be branded as Simmons & Simmons JWS and will start operations on 1 November.

Simmons & Simmons said in a statement the JLV launch responds to the growing financial services industry in Singapore and the need to offer integrated services to clients across the firm’s key areas of focus, such as asset management & investment funds and financial institutions.

“Given Singapore’s increasing importance as a commodities, asset management and financial institution hub, we are excited about the opportunities this brings to further expand our leading practices in each of these areas,” said Simmons & Simmons’ managing partner Jeremy Hoyland.

Simmons & Simmons set up its fifth Asia office in Singapore in 2013 with four partners, including lateral hire banking partner Dan Marjanovic from Norton Rose Fulbright.

In April this year, the firm appointed former Dentons Singapore managing partner Matthew Cox to strengthen its commodity trade finance practice.

Reed Smith is another international firm that has recently moved to offer integrated international and Singapore legal services, through its formal law alliance (FLA) with local firm Resource Law. Resource Law was established by Mohan Subbaraman, formerly the managing partner of Ince & Co’s Singapore alliance firm Incisive Law, earlier this year.

Holman Fenwick Willan, Herbert Smith Freehills and RPC are among other firms that have launched a JLV or a FLA over the past year.

Currently, there are seven JLVs and eight FLAs in Singapore.

According to The Lawyer Asia Pacific 150 2016 report, Simmons & Simmons is the 41st largest international firm in the region with 73 lawyers including 27 partners across five offices.
