DWF pushes further into Middle East with Qatar launch

DWF is to open its fourth office in the Middle East after being granted a licence to practise in Qatar.

The firm already has a presence in Jeddah, Riyadh and Dubai. The licence has been a long time in coming, with The Lawyer first reporting in 2016 that DWF was looking at the region after launching its first overseas office in Dubai in 2015.

The licence has been granted from the Qatar Financial Centre and will enable it to build on its construction disputes, infrastructure and energy practice.

DWF construction and infrastructure partner John Coghlan, who joined DWF from Addleshaw Goddard in late 2016, will be leading the new office.

DWF’s international CEO Stefan Paciorek said: “We have worked with clients in Qatar for some time now, and so establishing a formal presence on the ground is a natural extension of this and reflects the ongoing development of the practice.”

“The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) remains one of the most dynamic regions in the world and offers great opportunity for those businesses with a clear purpose and mission.”

The office opening is the latest launch for DWF, which has become increasingly global in the last 12 months. Yesterday the firm announced it would open an offering in Turkey, also launching in Italy last October.

DWF opened six offices in 2017, including two new operations in Continental Europe. The firm opened in Berlin in March after hiring two lawyers from DLA Piper. It also launched its first office in France through a merger with four-partner Paris firm Heenan Paris.

In the Asia Pacific region, DWF also launched two offices in Melbourne and Brisbane through a combination with independent firm MVM Legal. DWF further opened in Singapore after hiring from Eversheds Sutherland’s practice.

It gained bases in Sydney, Chicago and Toronto after the acquisition of Tritonin January.

There were a further trio of associations in South America, as DWF entered into a non-exclusive best friends arrangement with Vagedes & Associados in Argentina, Fabrega Molino in Panama and Duarte Garcia Abogados in Colombia.
