Bakers hires Simmons for sexual assault investigation

Baker McKenzie has instructed Simmons & Simmons to conduct an independent external review into the way it handled a sexual assault incident by a UK partner.

This new development, first reported by RollOnFriday today, follows an apology made by the firm earlier this month over the way it handled a complaint made by an associate several years ago.

The associate alleged that she was sexually assaulted by a Bakers partner, before receiving a pay-out from the firm and being asked to enter into a confidentially agreement before her departure.

A Bakers spokesperson said: “Baker McKenzie has appointed Simmons & Simmons to conduct an independent review of this incident and how it was subsequently handled. The review will also look at and review all of our complaints policies and procedures to ensure our employees are protected and have a voice.

“We will follow the recommendations of the review and will take all appropriate action. As a firm, our values of inclusion and diversity are extremely important to us and we are committed to ensuring the welfare of employees.”

Dentons also announced it was launching an investigation into the behaviour of a legacy Maclay Murray & Spens partner, after female employees flagged alleged inappropriate sexual behaviour.
