Dentons enters Paris hiring fray with King & Spalding team grab

The Parisian lateral market boom has continued this week after Dentons hired a team from King & Spalding to grow its real estate offering in the city.

The three-strong lawyer team joining Dentons is led by partner Pascal Schmitz. Schmitz headed King & Spalding’s real estate and private equity team in France for five years, having joined from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer where he was a partner for over 15 years.

His team is made up of associates Peter Schafer and Alexandre d’Avout d’Auerstaedt. These hires bring Dentons’ offering up to 20 real estate lawyers in Paris.

Europe board chair and global real estate co-chair Evan Lazar said: “This move reflects our long-term strategy to invest in key Western European markets, of which Paris is a top priority.”

Since the start of this year, Paris has been a hive of lateral hiring activity for international firms. Earlier this month, Simmons & Simmons hired Winston & Strawn partner Guillaume-Denis Faure to join its dispute resolution team and DLA Piper launched a funds offering in Paris with the hire of corporate partner Benjamin Aller, from management consultancy MJ Hudson.

Earlier this year, Reed Smith ramped up its Paris office with a four-lawyer team hire from White & Case.

The most explosive lateral move of the year so far was the ex-KWM tax team that exited Reed Smith after just one year to join DLA Piper.

Dentons has been investing in its Continental European offering over the past few months. The firm appointed Marc Fornacciari as France managing partner last month and hired a real estate team in Milan from Allen & Overy led by partner Carlo Merisio.

Earlier this year, the firm hired Chiomenti partner Giovanni Diotallevi to develop its project finance team in Rome. The firm also hired an eight-strong tax team in St Petersburg, led by Deloitte head of TMT Vasilii Markov.
