Clifford Chance Tokyo gains new litigation chief

Clifford Chance has hired a new head of litigation and dispute resolution in Tokyo.

Peter Coney will lead the team in Japan.

Coney qualified as a solicitor in Australia in 1999 and in England & Wales in 2009, and was registered to practice law in Japan in 2015. He joined Linklaters in Tokyo in 2000, moving to Herbert Smith Freehills in 2002. He then spent a spell in Sydney with Jamieson Legal from 2013 to 2015 before returning to Tokyo with Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu.

Nish Shetty, Clifford Chance’s head of litigation and dispute resolution for Asia-Pacific said: “We are delighted to welcome Peter to the team. His dispute resolution expertise will provide clients with the further support they need as they continue to invest in Japan and abroad.”

Clifford Chance launched in Tokyo in 1987 and expanded its presence through a joint venture with Tanaka & Akita in 2001, making it one of the biggest international firms in Japan at the time. It refocused in the country in 2011, letting 10 lawyers leave for K&L Gates.

The firm appointed Singapore managing partner Geraint Hughes as its new Asia Pacific regional managing partner in 2016, assuming the role from Peter Charlton.
