Prosecutor with medieval history expertise will take more prominent role on Trump’s legal team

A contract prosecutor who handles murder cases in Brunswick, Georgia, is taking a more prominent role on President Donald Trump’s legal team after the recent resignation of lead lawyer John Dowd.

Andrew Ekonomou has already been assisting Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow in the Russia investigation, Reuters reports.

Ekonomou works for the Lambros firm in Atlanta, and handles contract work for the District Attorney’s office in Brunswick. Ekonomou was previously chief of the criminal division in the U.S. Attorney’s office in Atlanta and briefly served as acting U.S. Attorney.

Ekonomou tells Reuters he “prosecutes a lot of murders” for the district attorney in Brunswick. Asked to comment on his recent big cases, Ekonomou said, “That’s basically it. Nothing earthshaking.”

Ekonomou, who is 69, told Reuters he received a doctorate in medieval history at Emory University in 2000 after going through a mid-life crisis. He has written a book on Byzantine Rome and the Greek popes. He lists an ability to speak French, Greek and Italian, according to his LinkedIn page.

Trial lawyer Drew Ashby worked with Ekonomou between 2007 and 2010. He told Reuters that Ekonomou is “a force of nature” who “has the kind of presence and the kind of mind that I would think would make Donald Trump listen.”
