Foley & Lardner, Gardere announce merger

Foley & Lardner and Gardere Wynne Sewell will merge effective on Sunday.

The combined firm will have about 1,100 lawyers and revenues of $830 million, a figure that puts the merged firm among the top 50 in the United States, according to a press release. Its 24 offices will be located in the United States, Mexico, Asia and Europe.

The combination gives Foley a presence in Texas, Colorado and Mexico City. Gardere benefits from Foley’s strong presence in the Midwest, the East and West coasts and Florida, as well as Belgium and Tokyo.

Partners approved the merger in October, Texas Lawbook reports. Foley, which has strengths in renewable energy, will be adding expertise in oil and gas. Foley also has healthcare expertise while Texas has an emerging healthcare market.

“We’d been looking at Texas for a long time,” said Foley chairman and CEO Jay Rothman, in an interview with Texas Lawbook. “We had a number of clients doing business in Texas. There was great geographic pull.”

The combined firm will be known as Foley Gardere at its Texas and Colorado offices and as Foley Gardere Arena in Mexico City, and Foley & Lardner at all other offices.
