UVA Law to receive $43.9 million donation from 2 alumni

“Education is the foundation of a healthy, thriving democracy,” the couple said in a press release from the law school. “We want to empower students to pursue their goals as knowledgeable, engaged citizens, and we want democratic principles to flourish for the good of society.”

The gift, which is the largest in the school’s history, will be fully funded by 2022, according to the release, and it includes $18.9 million in matching funds from the University’s Board of Visitors to be given in the Karshes’ name. The donation will provide three-year tuition and fee scholarships for law students, establish the Karsh Center for Law and Democracy and create an endowed chair affiliated with the center.

Including earlier donations, the couple has given more than $50 million to the law school.

The Karshes are co-owners of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors. Bruce, Karsh, a former O’Melveny & Myers lawyer, is a co-founder and chief investment officer of Oaktree Capital Management, a global investment management firm based in Los Angeles.

Martha Karsh, who previously practiced with Stroock & Stroock & Lavan and Adams Duque & Hazeltine, co-manages the Karsh Family Foundation and is a co-founder of Clark & Karsh, a Los Angeles business that handles architecture, design and development.
