US charges WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange for publishing classified information

Julian Assange has been charged with violating the US Espionage Act by publishing classified information through WikiLeaks.

Prosecutors on Thursday unveiled 17 additional charges against Assange, who was previously indicted on a charge of working to hack a Pentagon computer system.

The new charges against Assange, 47, raise profound questions about the freedom of the press under the first amendment of the US constitution. They may also complicate Washington’s attempts to extradite him from London.

From 2010, WikiLeaks published hundreds of thousands of secret US government records, including logs from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, that it received from Chelsea Manning, then a US army intelligence analyst.

Manning also gave WikiLeaks a huge cache of secret diplomatic cables. Some of the files were published by WikiLeaks in partnership with news organisations including the Guardian.
