Hogan Lovells Hamburg MP steps down amid “illegal surveillance” claims

Hogan Lovells’ Hamburg managing partner Eckard Schwarz has resigned over allegations of “illegal surveillance” of a former EWE Group employee.

According to German legal magazine JuVe, energy supplier EWE is understood to have ended its relationship with Hogan Lovells following the investigation.

EWE’s HR director Nikolaus Behr has already offered his resignation as a result of the allegations.

Schwarz and Behr are understood to have worked together in the illegal surveillance of one of EWE’s employees in relation to an employment dispute.

The Hamburg district attorney’s office is understood to have started an investigation into the claims.

Hamburg intellectual property partner Susanne Karow has now replaced Schwarz as managing partner of Hogan Lovells’ Hamburg office.

Hogan Lovells has four offices in Germany – in Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Munich.

It was forced to close its Berlin office in 2013 after nine partners exited for Morrison & Foerster.

The firm has been contacted for a comment.
