Freshfields makes up six City lawyers in largest promotions round since 2012

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has promoted six City lawyers in its largest promotions round since 2012.

A total of 18 lawyers have been made up globally and will join Freshfields’ partnership this May.

The magic circle firm has generally reduced its partnership promotions in recent years, since making up 20 partners in 2012.

Last year Freshfields made up 16 new partners globally, including five in London.

The entire London cohort trained at Freshfields. Nicholas Frey and Nicholas Williams will become partners in the dispute resolution team, while James Scott will be a partner in the corporate team.

London-based finance lawyer Richard Hart, tax lawyer May Smith and competition lawyer Michele Davis complete the City set.

Freshfields’ global corporate department saw the largest promotions round this year, with seven lawyers made up in total.

Two corporate lawyers have been made up in Beijing – a reverse on last year’s promotions in which no Asia-based partners were made up.

Other Asia-based promotions include competition associate Kaori Yamada, who is based in Tokyo.

There was one partner promotion in the New York office (corporate lawyer Omar Pringle), as well as another in Dubai (dispute resolution lawyer Sami Tannous). All of the remaining seven promotions come from Freshfields’ continental European offices.

The firm is the first of the magic circle to reveal its 2017 partners round. Only one other UK top 20 firm has announced this year’s promotions – Pinsent Masons promoted 16 lawyers earlier this week.
